$1M donation gives UT graduate programs a boost - Pacific Business News (Honolulu):

Ungerleider, who received his bachelor's degrewe in psychology in 1970 from UT while competing asa gymnast, said he' creating the fellowship named for the currenrt university president to help attract top graduate students from around the world. The firsr class of Powers Graduate Fellowsz will enter the university infall 2009. "Wre have an absolute gem here with the said Ungerleider, "and we have a visionary sittinb in the president's office. I wanted to honotr both." The gift has been facilitated by Ungerleide through the Foundation for GloballSports Development, an outreach and mentorship educational where Ungerleider is a trustee. "We are indebted to Dr.
Ungerleide r for this generous gift," said Powers. "Hew clearly understands the importance of graduate students to the successe ofour university. I am deeplyh honored that he chose to name this significant fellowship programafter me." Despite receiving his master's and doctor's degreesz from another institution, Ungerleider chose The Universithy of Texas at Austin for his gift to support the president'as goal of becoming the top public researcnh institution in the country.
Ungerleided said in conversations with Powers he learned that while many top prospectivs graduate students would like to attendUT Austin, the universitgy loses some because they are offerede better financial packages elsewhere. To learn more aboug graduate education atthe university, Ungerleider lookex at the university's most prestigious graduatew fellowship program, the Donaldf D. Harrington Graduate Fellowship, and met with several Harringtobgraduate fellows. He said he was impressed with the model of supportiny the very best students witha multi-year package and providint a community of mentors and peers to enhancer the graduate experience.
Ungerleider said he wantds to create another fellowship programn to honor the academic excellence of the next generation and continu e the practice of graduate studentx developing their own expertis under the mentorship ofseasoned faculty. "In 2010, the Graduatd School will celebrateits 100-year anniversary and will look towardc the future of graduates education at the university," said Victoria Rodríguez, vice provost and dean of graduates studies.
