According to preliminary counts, a total of 8,870o passengers arrived June 1-4 on flights to Hawaiui from Japan. That’s a 32 percentt drop from the same periodsin 2008, about 1,000 fewerr visitors per day. The Japanese visitof falloff begin the second week in May and was directlyh attributed toswine flu, also called H1N1 influenzaz A. Even though Japan has as of Wednesday, 385 swine flu casesd of its own, ranking it amonh the top six countriesx affected bythe infection, many Japanese companies have banned employeesx from overseas travel. The swine flu outbreak is also affectinbg travel from other Asian countriess to North Americaand Europe, according to Hawaiio Tourism Asia.
The South Korean travel industryreports 15-30 percent cancellatiom rates in trips to U.S. destinations sincd the end of April. Cancellationsx to Hawaii are under10 percent. The Chines travel industry, meantime, said cancellations in outboun d travelare increasing, with fewer new-booked packagews to the U.S.
